We used two 128 GB SDXC cards formatted as exFAT plus one 32 GB SDHC card formatted as FAT32. The test set included JPEG, CR3, MP4, MOV, WAV, plus small office files. Scenarios covered ordinary deletion, quick formatting, a removed partition record, plus interrupted camera-video writes.
Each card was imaged before scanning. R-Studio plus Disk Drill ran on the same Windows 11 PC through the same USB 3.2 card reader. A file counted as recovered only if it opened fully, matched the expected size, plus played from beginning to end where applicable. Scan speed, result clarity, licensing, preview quality, plus support replies also affected the scores.
Skip R-Studio if you have never worked with partitions, file systems, disk images, or raw signatures. It can display a huge amount of information without telling you which result is the safest choice. A tool with a guided card-recovery workflow is less likely to leave you second-guessing every click.
Do not use any recovery app directly on a card that repeatedly disconnects, becomes hot, makes a reader reset, or vanishes from Disk Management. That points to a physical or electrical problem. Power the card down, avoid repeated scans, plus contact a recovery lab if the files are irreplaceable.

We tested deleted files, a quick-formatted exFAT card, plus a card with a damaged partition record. R-Studio restored 68% of the usable test set. Ordinary JPEGs fared best. Several MOV clips appeared in the results but would not play from start to finish.
The software did preserve useful folder structure in the simpler deletion case. Once file-system metadata was gone, though, the result list filled with duplicate candidates plus generic filenames. Sorting out which copy was complete became a manual job.
Preview support worked for many JPEG images, but it was patchy across larger RAW photos plus damaged video. Some entries looked promising from their names or sizes, only to produce no useful preview. That is a bad spot to be in when the card holds a wedding shoot or paid client work.

Those controls matter for technicians handling unusual partitions or RAID work. They brought less value to our SD card tests because the main problem was not finding more entries. It was identifying which photos plus videos were actually complete.
R-Studio Standard for Windows costs $79.99 as a permanent license. That sounds reasonable beside recurring recovery subscriptions. The catch is its restrictive standalone licensing plus a demo that only recovers files no larger than 256 KB. A modern camera photo will normally exceed that ceiling.
The demo can still scan plus preview files, but it offers little chance to test a meaningful full-size recovery. The standard license is also tied to one computer under its license terms. Disk Drill costs more upfront for lifetime use, though it covers Windows plus macOS, permits up to three activations, plus gives Windows users 100 MB of free recovery.

Disk Drill is the better fit for photographers, videographers, plus regular home users who need useful answers without learning a technician's interface first.
Disk Drill recovered 91% of our usable SD card test set, including more playable camera clips than R-Studio. Advanced Camera Recovery was especially helpful with fragmented video, while previews plus recovery-chance labels made the result list easier to judge.
It is not cheap. Disk Drill PRO costs $89 per year or $149 for a lifetime license. Still, one license covers Windows plus macOS with up to three activations. The free Windows edition also restores up to 100 MB, enough to test several photos rather than tiny document fragments.
One data-recovery community member described R-Studio as widely used in logical recovery labs, while warning that failing drives should be cloned before any file scan.
A recent commenter called R-Studio powerful but said users need to understand its controls. For simple deleted-file jobs, they felt much of the software would go unused.

Photographers plus home users should start with Disk Drill, preview several important files, then pay only if those previews open correctly.
Lock the SD card, create a byte-to-byte image, then scan the image with Disk Drill before touching the original media again.
